Lung Cancer Mesothelioma

While they share the same symptoms mesothelioma and cancer of the lungs are two distinct illnesses. Mesothelioma is a cancer that occurs in the membranes that cover organs and structures, including the lungs.

Doctors use fluid samples taken from pleural space and CT scans to determine mesothelioma. They may also conduct lung cancer asbestosis biopsy or a VATS procedure, which uses keyhole surgery to remove tissues for examination.

Symptoms

Mesothelioma, a rare cancerous condition, develops in the thin layer that protects your internal organs. The most common form, pleural mesothelioma develops in the linings of your lung (pleura). It is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers that are inhaled into the lungs, which cause irritation and scarring.

The first signs of pleural cancer include chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and dry cough. These symptoms are akin to other lung conditions, so mesothelioma is often overlooked until it is in the stage of late.

As the mesothelioma grows patients suffer from fatigue, weight gain, nausea, and fever. Other signs like swelling in the face or Mesothelioma Lung Cancer arms and the appearance of a lump on the chest could indicate mesothelioma. In the later stages of mesothelioma patients may experience night sweats and anemia.

Doctors diagnose mesothelioma through reviewing the medical history of a patient and conducting a physical examination. They also perform imaging tests to check for tumors or other indications of mesothelioma. In certain instances, doctors will insert a tube into the chest to drain fluid. They may also request blood tests to assess the levels of certain proteins that are more prevalent in mesothelioma patients. These biomarkers can be used to differentiate mesothelioma from lung cancer.

Diagnosis

When mesothelioma is first diagnosed with lung cancer typically, it's at the stage of late. It can be difficult for doctors to distinguish from other lung diseases. Mesothelioma and lung cancer share similar symptoms such as difficulty breathing or chest pressure and the accumulation of fluid in the lung (pleural effusion). Many doctors don't identify mesothelioma until it has advanced or has reached a terminal stage.

Mesothelioma is classified based on the site of origin, with pleural mesothelioma that occurs in the lining of the lungs. Other less common types are peritoneal. It is found in the linings of the abdomen and testicular.

Mesothelioma is distinguished by tumors that invade the surrounding tissues. Mesothelioma expands faster than other lung cancers. A doctor will take an organ sample to search for mesothelial cells using a microscope. By using this information, doctors can determine if a person has mesothelioma or lung cancer.

A blood test can be used to determine if a patient suffers from mesothelioma. It is a test for a specific mesothelial cell released a protein into bloodstreams called mesothelin-related peptides that are soluble. This protein may be in the bloodstream for years before mesothelioma is discovered through imaging tests or biopsy. Doctors can also check the chest X-ray for evidence of asbestos exposure such as calcium deposits and the pleura's thickness. Doctors can also employ an instrument to drain fluid from the pleural cavity to test for cancer cells.

Treatment

There are many treatments available for patients diagnosed with mesothelioma of the lung. Treatments are based on the nature of the cancer, its location in the body, and the severity of the disease. When deciding on a treatment plan, doctors also consider the patient's medical and health history.

Doctors use various imaging studies to determine if mesothelioma is present. They may use chest X-rays and computerized tomography scans. They may also order a biopsy -- the removal of a small amount of tissue for testing. They will perform a lung function test, as well as an analysis of blood to look for certain biomarkers that could indicate mesothelioma.

Malignant mesothelioma is classified into three types based on the way that cells appear under a microscope. The three types are epithelioid and sarcomatoid mixed. Each category has different survival rates and treatment options.

Often, mesothelioma can only be detected at a late stage. This is the time when surgery is not an option. Doctors focus on treating symptoms to offer the most comfortable possible treatment for patients. Palliative care is the term used to describe this kind of treatment.

Patients with mesothelioma might also consider participating in a clinical study. These research studies improve existing treatment options as well as develop new ones. A mesothelioma expert can help patients find the appropriate study and discuss the treatment options.

Prognosis

The survival rate for malignant mesothelioma differs based on the nature risk of lung cancer the tumor and its stage at diagnosis. Other factors include general patient health and the treatment method chosen. Mesothelioma is able to spread to other parts of the body the process is known as metastasis. It may also return after having been treated.

The mesothelium membrane lines many cavities in the body. It is usually found in the lining of the lungs (pleura) but it can also be found in the abdomen's lining or around the heart.

Chest pain, and other symptoms can be caused by mesothelioma lung cancer. The symptoms can be similar to those of other conditions therefore it is essential to see a doctor about the symptoms.

A diagnosis of mesothelioma can be determined with the help of tests. For example, a doctor might request a CT scan or an MRI to determine changes in the lungs, such as pleural thickening, or pleural effusion, a build-up of fluid in the lung. They could also do a positron emission tomography scan (PET). This test involves giving a shot the radioactive compound used by cancer cells. Doctors can then see which area has the most cancerous tissue on an PET image.

Patients suffering from mesothelioma have the option to take part in a clinical trial for treatment. These studies are designed to improve treatments currently in use and to introduce new ones.
