Door Lock Repair - How to Fix Common Problems

A lock that doesn't latch properly is a sign that it should be repaired. The testers from CR mark the spot where the latch is in contact with the strike plate using lipstick. The tightening of the hinge screws could solve the problem.

Spraying a dry lubricant, like powdered graphite, or WD-40, on the lock cylinder may also help.

Check the Latch

The latch is the bolt that extends into the door frame to secure the lock after it is pulled by the knob or handle. Deadbolts and latches with positive locking are popular choices for extra security. If they don't shut or latch properly, the problem may be an unaligned latch and strike plate in the door frame.

The most common reason is hinges that are loose and can sag over time window and door repairs cause the latch to go over the strike plate. To test this, perform an experiment with lipstick. Apply some lipstick to the edge of the latch, and then attach the strip of masking tape to the strike plate. Close the door and you'll observe where the latch meets the plate. This will allow you to determine if the contact is too high or too low to function properly.

If the latch is contacting the strike plate at a distance of more than 1/8 inches high or too low, you'll need to reposition the strike plate. This is a straightforward task that is typically accomplished without the need to remove the doors. You'll need to use an instrument to increase the size of the strike hole of the plate. A half-round file is best since it follows the curve of the strike plate hole.

After moving the strike plate, you'll need to tighten screws that secure it to the frame of the door. This should allow your door to close and latch correctly. If this doesn't work tighten the hinge screws on either side of the door and see if that helps.

If the latch remains out of alignment even after lubrication, you'll need to take more drastic steps. You can remove the strike plate and then use a chisel that is sharp on the mortise of the strike plate, allowing you to move the latch up or down. You can also make use of a metal file reshape the strike plate so it fits into the mortise better. You might want to consider this option if you are worried about the strike plate breaking off when you travel in your RV.

Make sure you check the Keyway

If your lock isn't working properly, you could be leaving your property vulnerable to burglars. The good news is, certain types of door lock problems can be fixed without the need of professional assistance. This includes a lock or key that doesn't turn. The sooner you realize a problem and the more likely that you can solve it on your own.

If your key isn't going into or turning easily It could be having rough spots that require to be filed off. Locksmiths can help you with this however it's an easy DIY project you can do at home. Place the key in and move it around searching for Replacement Double Glazing a place which is creating friction. If you find any of these, you can file the rough spots with a fine metal file.

Another issue with door locks is a locked or jammed latch or bolt. This can be caused either due to debris or a broken key that has stuck itself into the mechanism. You may try using a needle or pin to remove the debris, but it is recommended to call an expert locksmith for a more thorough examination and removal of the damaged piece.

A deadbolt that isn't extended through the strike plate can also be a sign of a faulty lock. Over time the screws that secure the deadbolt in place may become loose and cause it to shift. This can make your home more vulnerable to burglars. Removing the screws may help, but if the deadbolt is still shifting it could be the time to invest in higher quality hardware.

If you have trouble with a cylinder which won't rotate when you turn the key, your key cylinder may be stuck. If this is the problem, you can use a lubricant. You could also use a dry graphite spray, lubricant or WD-40 to help lubricate the key cylinder and remove any buildup. Keep an ounce of these products in your bag and use them regularly to keep your locks in good shape. A lubricated lock is more likely to last longer than one that's not.

Check the Hinges

If the door lock cylinder turns easily when the door is open but doesn't stay locked when you close it hinges that are loose are usually to the blame. This is a problem that can be fixed. To resolve the issue fix it, tighten all the screws on the hinges. If the problem persists you may try removing or adding hinge'shims' to adjust alignment. These small metal plates are available at hardware stores and online.

You can also smooth the edges of mortises on the hinges, the slots which hold the hinges to ensure that they are flush with the frame. Another common cause of trouble locking is that the bolt for the latch may be too high or too low in the strike plate. To find out this, put a little lipstick on the latch and then place an area of masking tape over the strike plate. When you shut the door the lipstick will rub off the area of the tape that it touches and leave a mark that will indicate whether the latch is in contact with the strike plate above or below the hole.

If the latch doesn't engage properly with the strikeplate it could be due to dirt or grime. This debris can be removed by soaking a q-tip in graphite or silicone spray.

If the issue is not solved after applying the lubricant, then the lock cylinder may be jammed and need to be replaced. This is a task best done by an expert, but it's not difficult for anyone who is proficient in basic home repairs. When replacing the lock cylinder, make sure you choose one that has been tested and rated the BHMA to ensure that there are no issues with fitting and finish.

The hardware used to lock the door could be flimsy or poorly designed. This type of lock usually requires more maintenance than a high-quality lock, and it may not last as long. A higher-quality lock will usually resolve this issue. To ensure that your lock will last for years, replacement double glazing repair double glazing (company website) you should select a lock with a durability rating of B or greater.

Make sure you check the Strike Plate

A door window handle repair glass replacement (Tomaszowmazowiecki Praca Gov site) latch that doesn't reach the strike plate may cause a myriad of issues, from stopping the door from closing and latching properly to making it difficult to open. It's not as difficult to fix as you might think. Gravity, sagging hinges and even movement of the home foundation can cause the latch to not align with the strike plate however, often a few minor replacement double glazing adjustments will fix the issue.

If tightening the hinges and applying lubrication to the keyway does not solve the issue the strike plate could require to be moved to a new position to align with the latch. To do this, remove the strikeplate and mark the spot where the latch will be. Mark this area with caulk, lipstick or a stripe of masking tape. If the mark is lower than the hole where the strike plate is, this means that the latch is hitting the plate too high. A lower strike plate location will solve the issue. If the mark is above the strike plate's hole, you can move the strike plate upwards a small amount.

Once you have determined the direction in which the strike plate should be adjusted, take the strike plate from the frame. Keep the screws in a secure location so that you can replace them at a later date. You will also need to grease the keyway of the strike plate to ensure that it can move effortlessly.

Next, determine whether the contact point of the latch is above or below the strike hole in the plate. You can do this with paint, lipstick, or chalk. After closing the door, open it to observe where the mark has been left on the masking tape or latch. If the mark is lower than the strike plate, this means that the latch is hitting the strike plate too low and the higher position of the strike plate will resolve the problem.

To adjust the strike plate, remove it from the mortise. Then with a sharp knife, chisel, or hammer, widen the plate to ensure that it can be moved either upwards or downwards to match the position of the latch. After the strike plate has been moved, check the door to ensure that it closes and latches easily. After you have completed the adjustments, you can reconnect the strike plate to the frame of the door and fill in any existing gap or screw holes with wood filler that is the same color as the rest of the door frame.
